THE
MIND ALTERING
ADVENTURE

Chapter Thirty-Four

C-R-E-A-K!! "Well, I'll be damned," Luke whispers in awe as he peers down into the coffins from which an unearthly glow is emanating. "Luce, baby, not only has the tide turned, but Christmas came early!"

"Somebody staked them for us?" Lucy asks as she creeps forward. "Please tell me that those aren't vampires."

"Darlin', those are angels from heaven," Luke tells her.

She gasps in surprise as she sees the occupants of the coffins. "Luke, what the...?"

The fluid in the coffins has started to drain through tubes, and a temperature gauge has begun to rise along with fluctuating changes in other digital displays. Luke is concerned, but dares not touch anything. He moves quickly to prop open the door for Frisco whom he calls on the walkie-talkie.

"Frisco, you need to come down her, ASAP! There is something-that is someone, a couple of someones that you need to see. Now."

Luke turns back to Lucy who stands stunned at the possibilities she's contemplating.

"Luke, what does this mean? I mean, does this mean what I think it means?"

"Depends on what you think it means," Luke answers. "Lucy, just sit tight. Don't touch anything."

A couple of minute later, Frisco sprints in. He looks around at the cavern like room, at the two coffins that are open. Composing himself, he saunters over to the coffins, as if this was an everyday occurrence. A quick glance down, and he's rendered temporarily speechless. "What the....holy....Wait until....." He turns to Luke and asks, "Are they alive?" Hmmmmmmmm

Kathryn enters Mac's office at PCPD where he's been pouring over a print-out from the WSB. There are a few interesting facts, some incidental information, and he's trying to make sense of what he's learned. "Mac," Kathryn begins.

He looks up. "Can it wait?"

"No. I've scheduled a press conference for you in twenty minutes." She hands him a clean shirt and matching tie. "You've got time to change and meet them on the steps."

"What are you talking about?" He asks impatiently. "I've got work to do."

"Darling, your public image has suffered quite a bit lately, what with the murders and Kevin. People are talking and it would do a lot for you if you reassured your public that an arrest is forthcoming."

"Kathryn, that would be a lie."

She smiles indulgently as at a stubborn child. "Mac-it's really true, and besides, that's how this business works. Maybe you won't arrest someone today, or tomorrow, but.."

"But nothing. Unschedule the conference, or handle it yourself. I have a job to do."

"Mac, I can't just do that. There will be more questions raised if you don't go."

Mac is clearly irritated. "Kathryn, you made the $%^& conference, you deal with it. But you don't have the sanction of this office to speak for me. Get that straight. When I want a press conference scheduled, I'll do it myself."

"But Mac..."

"Kathryn, we have one or more people committing murders, a man missing, not to mention an assortment of other crimes going on. I don't have time to play PR games with you." With that, he turns away from her, and back to the file.

Kat, more than a trifle irritated, turns to leave his office. Hmmmmm

Jason is talking to Sonny, aware that he's going to have to talk with Mac. "I guess that Carly's baby might have been mine. I did use condoms, but they aren't 100% effective."

"Kid, you don't have to go to the police. If nobody can ID you as having been with Carly, then they'll never come looking for you."

Jason hedges. "We did spend time together at Jake's. I can't say that nobody noticed."

Sonny shakes his head. "Look-I've got guys combing the streets, trying to turn up any information on who might have killed Carly and Gina both. Do you have any links with her that could cause problems?"

"Only Robin," Jason admits. "She took a dislike to Gina because of Stone, and that's all."

"It's a link," Sonny says. "Damn. If you go to the cops, then they're going to investigate you."

"And that will affect you," Jason deduces.

"But if you don't go, then they may find out anyhow and that will look worse," Sonny tells him. "What we have to do is decide which is the lesser amount of exposure."

Jason nods. "I don't mind going to the cops-I didn't kill Carly."

"But they need to hang it on someone, and if you tell them that you slept with her, and it turns out that the baby was yours, then that could be a motive. They'll think that she was blackmailing you because you're a Q."

"I was a Q."

"That won't make a difference to the cops. A motive is a motive, and they need to look like they're doing their job."

"I understand." He shrugs. "I can take the heat."

"It might involve an arrest."

"So?"

"You get busted for murder and the Qs will come after me." Sonny shrugs, too. "Not that it will bother me. I can take it, but it will definitely screw with ELQ and that is bad for both of us."

"I see," Jason says. "How about I lose a little more memory?" Jason asks. "These things happen."

"Understandable," Sonny says. "Brain damage and all that." Hmmmmmmm

Stay tuned!!! What or whom is in the coffins in the castle in the Carpathians??? Angels from Heaven?? And is Kathryn on her way out of more than Mac's office??? What is in the WSB file that has so effectively captured Mac's attention? How much more memory will Jason lose?? Maybe some of his other memory loss is as convenient??? Hmmmmmmmm
